Track and Field Events

Each age groups' events are listed with their age group information. In addition, there is a big table with all the events and the age groups that participate in them. Also note that each event for U9 - U17 has an associated qualifying distance or time, which must be achieved twice during the season in order to compete in that event at the State Individual Championships.

Provided here is a short summary of some of the more important rules for various competition events. The information shown here is by no means definitive. A more complete list of competition rules are included in the booklet "Basic Guide for Officials of Little Athletics", a copy of which is available in the clubrooms.

Parents who undertake a basic official’s course will be provided with a personal copy. All parents and athletes should appreciate that these rules are enforced in the interests of fairness and safety of ALL athletes. They are also enforced in the interest of our athletes when they have the opportunity of competing with athletes of other centres and are under the control of other than the usual familiar faces.

Unexpected disqualification can be heartbreaking for any athlete. Prevention through education is the best policy. If there are parents who would like to know how they could learn more about the conduct of the various events, then the person to talk to is our organiser of officials.

A general introduction covering all events can be arranged early in the season for those parents who are interested.

Track Events
Track events are scored based on time taken to complete. As a result, good timekeeping is critical.
Track events are divided into walks, runs, hurdles and relays.

Field Events
Field events are scored on distance (or height).
Field events consist of long jump, triple jump, high jump, discus, shot put and javelin.

Starting in the 2009-10 season SELAC introduced the Turbo-Jav for younger athletes, as a fun-only event.
